When my husband and I traveled to Spain two years ago, one of our favorite memories was sitting and relaxing while drinking delicious sangria. I’ve fantasized ever since then about having sangria that good but so far haven’t been able to match that magical flavor stateside.
Though I may never recreate that exact taste, after reading this article in the NY Times I was inspired to try my hand at making my own sangria. Then I saw this fab recipe on Smitten Kitchen and I knew it was time to give it a go. With a lot of extra bottles of red wine on hand (we’re more white wine lovers) I figured it’d be the perfect time to get going on my sangria dreams.

I adapted the recipe a bit because the wine I had on hand were different than what the recipe called for. But the beauty of sangria is you can alter any of the components to suit your personal taste.
Here is my recipe (with origins from the Classic Sangria recipe found here)
Two 750 mL bottles of red wine (I used a red zinfandel)
1 cup of brandy
1 cup of orangina soda
1/4 cup orange juice
1/4 triple sec
splash of grand marnier
1/2 cup of sugar
1/4 simple syrup
Add ice + fruit, serve chilled and voila! Sangria at your service.
It definitely tasted different with the type of zinfandel I used, which is why I added the sugar to add a bit of sweetness to it. But again, that is personal preference. Go ahead and flavor it till you’re satisfied and enjoy!
