A few years ago I watched the documentary Food, Inc. and was horrified at what I saw. (If you haven’t seen this movie I highly recommend it!) It instantly changed the way I approach food buying and consumption. In addition to being more aware about where our food comes from, I’ve recently started thinking about the origin of my health and beauty products. I love makeup as much as the next girl but I realized I also needed to start making some changes in my beauty routine to adopt a healthier lifestyle.
Deodorant was the first and easiest place to make the switch. After coming across this great blog from a friends feed and reading some information about the potential dangers of deodorant, I picked up Tom’s of Maine natural deodorant from my local Whole Foods. I was worried it wouldn’t be able to handle my sweating but was happy to find out that not only did it keep me sweat-free it actually worked better than other deodorants I’ve tried in the past. Plus, it didn’t irritate my sensitive skin.
When I ran out, I decided to give another deodorant a try based on glowing reviews. I picked up Dr. Hauschka’s roll-on deodorant also at Whole Foods and gulped at the checkout when I saw the hefty $20 price tag. The smell was nice and roll-on application very easy, but I found I had to use way more for minimal results. I was definitely still sweating and even smelling a bit so I realized my pricey experiment was pointless. Of course, this is only my personal experience and others may have had different results. But for now, I’m sticking with the cheaper Tom’s version. It’s highly effective and I feel good about what I’m putting on my skin.

August 7, 2013 at 5:40 amI'm trying to hard to get into natural deodorant but I haven't been successful yet. I think my body is too used to wearing strong men's 24/7 deodorants and I need to give it time to readjust, it's just hard to risk smelling bad for a week lol. Any advice in making the switch?

August 7, 2013 at 2:18 pmhaha that is a good point, I honestly didn't really worry too much about the smelling (if anything I just put on a bit more perfume in the morning.) I used to wear clinical strength deodorant and somehow my body seems to have adjusted (at least no one has told me I smell yet! lol) I also try to reapply more often, especially if I'm outside or in an environment where I'm sweating more. So I guess those would be my only tips, but you never know until you try 🙂 I say give it a go!
